Guide for authors
Preparation and editorial guidelines for Exposome — article types, peer review, ethics, data policies, and open-access terms.
Exposome welcomes original submissions across its five sections. This guide covers manuscript preparation, peer review, ethics, data and code policies, licensing, and the specific resources available to guest editors and reviewers. For the short version on how to submit, see Submit to Exposome.
Before you submit
Check that your manuscript is anonymised for blind review, that all figures are 300 dpi or vector, that ORCIDs are included for every author, and that data/code DOIs are ready where applicable.
Article types
- Editorial — by invitation.
- Research Article — primary empirical contributions. 4,000–7,000 words. Up to 8 figures/tables.
- Review — comprehensive synthesis (systematic or narrative). Typically up to 10,000 words.
- Commentary — shorter, opinionated pieces. 1,500–3,000 words.
- Letter to the Editor — concise response to published articles. Up to 1,000 words.
Peer review
All submissions undergo single-blind peer review by at least two independent reviewers. Average time to first decision is 6 weeks; revisions typically return within 2–4 weeks. Reviewer identities are not disclosed to authors by default. Transparent peer review — publication of the review correspondence alongside the article — is available opt-in at acceptance.
Manuscript preparation
Submissions should be prepared in Microsoft Word, LaTeX, or plain Markdown. Figures as TIFF/PNG at 300 dpi minimum (vector preferred for plots). References in any consistent style; journal style is applied at copy-editing.
Publishing ethics
Manuscripts must not have been published previously and must not be under consideration elsewhere. Authorship must meet ICMJE criteria. Conflict-of-interest statements are required for every author. Preprints are allowed and encouraged; cite the preprint DOI in the submission.
Data and code availability
All data necessary to reproduce the reported findings must be made publicly available in a discipline-appropriate repository, or the barrier to release and its rationale must be clearly stated. Code should be archived with a persistent identifier (Zenodo, Software Heritage, or similar).
Open access & licensing
Exposome is fully open access. Accepted articles are published under a Creative Commons license selected at acceptance. Authors retain copyright. Specific license terms are indicated on each article page.
Article Processing Charges
Invited contributions are free. For other submissions, APCs are under review; full and partial waivers are available, including waivers for authors from low- and middle-income countries.
Calls for papers
Calls for papers on focused topics are issued periodically by the editorial team. Active calls, including deadlines and guest editor contacts, are posted to this page.
No active call at this time.
Guest editor pack
Special-issue guest editors receive a written pack covering editorial decision boundaries, timelines, conflict-of-interest handling, and review-management workflows. Contact the editorial office to propose a special issue.
For reviewers
Reviewers are invited on a topic-by-topic basis. Self-nomination is welcome — email reviewers@exposomejournal.com with a one-paragraph description of your methodological expertise and two representative publications.
Reviewer guidelines
Reviews are expected within three weeks of acceptance. Reviewers are asked to comment on (1) scientific rigor, (2) novelty in context, (3) appropriateness of methods, (4) reproducibility of reported analyses, (5) clarity of presentation, and (6) appropriateness of scope for the journal. Decline promptly if you cannot meet the timeline.
Reviewer recognition
All reviewers who complete at least two reviews in a calendar year receive a named acknowledgement in the following year's January editorial, and an optional ORCID-linked verified review record.
Conflict-of-interest policy
Reviewers must disclose financial, professional, or personal conflicts with any author. The handling editor will reassign the review if disclosed conflicts affect impartiality.
